A review of London’s latest restaurants opening soon

Published: 25/10/2016

1. Temper
Opens 5th of November | 25 Broadwick Street, W1F 0DF
Butcher preparing meat
The Nudge has the first scoop on this scorcher of a restaurant, claiming that “There’ll be an open fire pit in the middle of the main dining area, from which you’ll see rare breed animals like beer-fed Dexter beef or Berkshire pork cooked. There’ll be no waste either, with excess fat used to make butter, and bones used for broth. The menu will see soy cured raw beef, lardo and pancetta carbonara, and fire-baked cookie with dulce de leche ice cream.” I don’t know about you but this is definitely on our list of must-visit restaurants.
2. Sakagura
Opens November | 8 Heddon Street, W1B 4BU
Sushi
The latest restaurant from The Japan Centre, The Nudge argues that “this Mayfair spot promises authentic Southern Japanese cuisine, including washoku dishes, centred on the three key ingredients of rice, miso and fish; a bar loaded with an extensive selection of sake, and handmade noodles. You will also be able to watch as the chefs cook, and then have you food served at the traditional wooden kappo counter.” Dining here will, undoubtedly, be an exquisite experience.
3. Aquavit London
Opens 24th November | No. 1 St. James' Market, 1 Carlton Street, SW1Y 4QQ
Sushi
Aquavit has been operating as a successful 2 starred-Michelin restaurant in New York City for almost 30 years, which is probably why they’ve decided to set up shop in London. The Caterer argues that it will “deliver an "authentic, contemporary" take on Nordic dining, serving accessible cuisine that uses fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and Nordic-inspired dishes. Dishes expected to feature include: butter-poached cod with fennel aioli and salt-baked celeriac root; and seared duck breast with pickled quince and buckwheat porridge, as well as classic Nordic choices such as toast skagern.” Can we reserve a table please?
4. Veneta
Opens 24 October | St James's Market, London SW1Y 4SB
Oysters
The Salt Yard Group is opening a new restaurant inspired by the timeless magic of Venice. Hot Dinners claims that, “Chef Director Ben Tish, and Head Chef Jamie Thickett (formerly of Opera Tavern) will oversee the menu. Seafood lovers will be happy as there'll be a raw bar serving up seasonal British and Venetian seafood. There'll also be a ham and cheese trolley - serving artisan charcuterie and cheeses from the Veneto region. And breakfast too. On that menu is: fresh fried fritelle with jam, chocolate and saffron custard, burrata with roast plums, hazelnuts and tarragon, smoked Scottish salmon, black truffle butter, scrambled eggs and polenta brioche and baked eggs with spinach, tomato ragu, speck and basil. The wine list will be completely Italian - and not only that, but completely Northern Italian in focus!” One word: Yum.
5. Sticks 'N' Sushi
Opens Autumn 2016 | Nova Victoria, 10 Sir Simon Milton Square, London, SW1E 5JL
Sushi
Sticks’n’Sushi serve high-quality, fresh food based on a unique combination of traditional sushi and yakitori sticks from the grill. Squaremeal claims that this “contemporary and relaxing Japanese chain hails from Copenhagen and you’ll spot a minimalist Scandi influence, with designer furniture, bare bricks and dramatic lighting. The approachable concept of serving sushi alongside grilled skewers (‘sticks’) isn’t strictly authentic, but results are impressive. Jewel-like sharing platters of “fantastic fresh sushi” taste as good as they look: witness subtly spiced ‘coal crab’ futomaki with crunchy soft-shell crab, black rice and sweet unagi sauce. Sticks include juicy scallop teriyaki and panko-breaded duck with wasabi, while well-chosen wines, saké and stylish Asian cocktails lend support.” Yes please!
