4 Innovations Bringing Sustainability to Your Apartment

Published: 18/05/2017

These days, sustainability is everywhere, and for good reason. We are using more resources than ever before, predominantly water and electricity. Luckily, new innovations are rapidly coming to market, allowing consumers to make conscious decisions about what they buy. Here are some of the best ones we’ve come across.
Cirrus Shower
Still in its crowdfunding stage, the Cirrus Shower Head is on a mission to reduce the amount of water and energy you use when you shower – by a staggering 75%. It allows your shower to expel pressurised mist instead of just water, increasing surface area coverage tenfold, ensuring every inch of your body is cleaned faster and more efficiently. For the average household, this extent of water reduction translates to over 15,000 gallons of water saved per year, meaning it pays for itself within two years.

Hue Lightbulb
Hue, the lighting system made by Philips, has recently made the news in several spaces. Just like regular lightbulbs, they fit into existing light sockets and can then be controlled from your smartphone using the Philips Hue app. Besides being LEDs, which are energy-saving by nature, this system allows you to turn dim, brighten, turn on and off whenever you please. This means you can never forget to turn your lights off again!
Zera Recycler
If you’ve ever thought about how much food, fruit & vegetable peel and other organic produce you throw out, it’s a lot! While this waste may not seem immediately useful in any way, composting is a great way to make use of such waste. However, traditional composting can take several months or even over a year to get results, which is where the Zera Recycler comes in. It fits seamlessly and elegantly into your kitchen, getting rid of your food waste and putting it to good use.

Nest Thermostat
In similar fashion to the Philips Hue lightbulbs, the Nest Thermostat has recently made the news, praised for its innovative functionality to help you keep comfortable and reduce your energy spending at home. Over time, the thermostat learns from your behaviour, adjusting the temperature to when you’ll be home or away, as well as keeping your house at an optimum temperature. This will mean your boiler will not have to work as hard to keep your home warm, as Nest’s intelligent system will keep your home warm without putting too much of a strain on your wallet, and on the environment.

These innovations will help bring sustainability to your apartment, whilst saving you money in the process, too. If everyone were to take on systems like these, we could then start to see the results of living in a more sustainability-conscious environment.
