5 Interior Design Tips to Maximise Space for Apartment Living

Published: 02/10/2016

Apartment living can sometimes mean compact dimensions. It does not mean though that you have to think small.
There are many tips and tricks you can use to maximise the area you have, and bring a feeling of light and space. Below are 5 to really bring your apartment to life.
1. Finding The Right Materials
Using reflective materials in a smaller space is the perfect way to subtly expand the size of any room. One major tip is putting a piece of furniture with a light source (for example a desk with a stylish lamp, like the image shows below) in front of a full length mirror, will help expand the size of a room. Another tip to fully utilise the use of the mirror, is to put it on the opposite wall to the window - doubling up the real window and doubling the natural light in the room expanding the space.

2. The Bigger The Furniture The Better

Rather than having lots of small bits of furniture to slot in the small areas of your apartment, get bigger pieces of furniture but less of them. This way, the space will be filled with more signature pieces to be seen and enjoyed, rather than smaller pieces that clutter the area.
3. Lighting
Having an abundance of lighting in a smaller room will help make it look a lot bigger. Don’t stick to one ceiling light or lamp, spread the light around and it will extend the rooms size. More specifically, having wall lights will fully elongate smaller walls and lighten up corners and awkward crevasses making rooms look larger. Also make table lamps your new best friend

4. Artwork
Including a big, dramatic art piece into a smaller room, can help a room feel sizeably larger. It draws the eyes to the attention of the artwork, rather than to the room itself. Having a big, colourful piece of art work will fit well onto the 4 popular colours in the next and final tip…
5. The Importance of Colour Choice
According to an Elle Decor article about how certain colours can make spaces feel bigger, there are 4 colours that have come up trumps: 1 - 3 are softer, more neutral colours which allow the room to stay light, exuding space. Don’t be put off with how dark number 4 is though, using lighter and neutral accessories and furnishing will ensure the darker shade doesn’t swallow the room. You may think that the smaller room in your home or future home might be your least favourite, but hopefully with these tips it can be an extension of your luxurious space.
