5 London “Must-Do’s” in May

Let’s face it, London’s a pretty spectacular place to be no matter what the time of year. Yet there’s something special about May, that time of year where Spring is slowly morphing into Summer, with warmer days and gentle breezes accompanying the still-novel longer evenings compelling you to head out and see what’s new.

 

But with so much to do in this vibrant city, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Our team look at 5 ‘Must Dos’ you really need to get involved with this May.
Underbelly Festival (28th April – 30th September)
An amalgamation of the previously successful Udderbelly and Wonderground festivals, the South Bank’s Underbelly Festival showcases some of the country’s greatest comedy and family entertainment acts. Commencing on 28th April and spanning a massive 14 weeks until late September, the Underbelly showcases a range of stand-up and character comedy, to world leading circus events and family shows. And with a variety of street food on offer, you’ll have everything you need to stay entertained this month and beyond.

Affordable Art Fair (11th – 14th May)
Taking place between Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th May, the Affordable Art Fair in Hampstead aims to make art more accessible to London’s young population. With prices for pieces capped at £5,000, the fair showcases artwork from household names at knock-down prices, whilst affording a platform for up and coming artists to exhibit their work to the next generation of buyers and enthusiasts. Whether you need a new piece to kit out your home, or simply wish to browse, the Affordable Art Fair is an excellent starting point, with buying advice on the event website helping make art buying open to a growing number of enthusiasts.
FA Cup Final (27th May)
With the final held each May, the English Football Association’s FA Cup is one of the most exciting sporting events of the UK calendar. With three of the four teams remaining in the competition calling the capital their home, and the final being held at London’s Wembley Stadium, this year’s final looks set to be a true London affair. Tickets to the event can be hard to come by, but with at least one team in the final set to be from London, what better way to spend your afternoon than watching the match with friends in one of the capital’s many bars and pubs? Whether you have a love for football or not, the FA Cup Final is an event not to be missed.

National Pet Show (6th – 7th May)
For competition of an altogether gentler variety, the National Pet Show on the 6th and 7th May is the perfect event for young families and animal lovers. Hosted at ExCel in London Docklands, the National Pet Show showcases a wide range of species and breeds, hosts entertaining competitions and caters for the shopping needs of London’s devoted pet owners. In between the live action displays, speak with experts and breeders for advice on your current and future pets – just don’t let the dog on the new sofa!
Pergola on the Roof (3rd May – 1st October)
For an altogether slower pace, why not check out Pergola on the Roof? Pergola take disused, unglamorous spaces and transform them into exciting and unique outdoor destinations. This May, Pergola on the Roof is taking over the top floor of the former BBC Television Centre car park, transforming the West London skyline into New York’s The Hamptons. The built-in food court allows you to sample some of the city’s finest food in one exciting, picturesque location. With exciting drinks available as well, it’s sure to be a night to remember.
