5 Things To Do In London In November

Published: 22/11/2017

The change of the clocks in November is a big moment. British Summer Time is well and truly over and it’s going to be a while before we feel the warmth of the sun’s rays again. Winter can be long and dark, but in London there’s plenty of reason to celebrate its arrival. The city comes alive, illuminated by activity; Bonfire Night, Christmas Markets and Ice Skating keep us absorbed through the long evenings. With so much going on it can be hard to know where to start, especially if you’re looking for something away from the obvious tourist traps. That’s why we’ve put together a short list of some of the more leftfield things we’re excited about in London this November.
1. Fireworks from a rooftop bar
The obvious way to start this list is Bonfire night, this year mostly happening on the 4th November to coincide with Saturday night. The firework displays are some of London’s top attractions and space is at a premium. Some choose to brave the displays, some bolt for the top of Primrose Hill for the all-inclusive panorama. But we think we’ll find ourselves a rooftop bar where we can watch in style, mulled wine firmly in hand. Our tip is Netil360 on Broadway Market with DJs and a cosy inside area to watch the pyrotechnic skyline.
2. A walk in the woods
Going for a walk in the countryside doesn’t have to be a treat reserved for countryside visits. There are options well within reach of London, if you’re prepared to hop on a short train. Woodberry Wetlands and Epping Forest are beautiful, peaceful and accessible, located in East London and a short ride out of Liverpool street. Probably best saved for a weekend morning, these are great option if you want a chance to enjoy nature at this time of year. .
3. Wildlife photographer of the year
One of the best things to do any time of year, this long running exhibition returned to the Natural History Museum in late October and will run until early 2018. Now in its fifty third year, it is a brilliant reminder of the world outside cities and of the impact our behaviour has on the natural world.
4. Ice climbing
Why not get stuck right into winter and try ice climbing? Yes, but in London? Like many improbable things, it is possible if you know where to look. Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports on Southampton Street has a vertical ice wall and will let anyone take a crack at it! Seasoned pick-wielder or total punter, it’s as just about as close to real adventure as you can get in the middle of town, so why not try something a little different?
5. A Finnish Rooftop Sauna
Having a sauna is probably a good idea post-ice climbing, or just the ideal way to unwind on a more normal day when you’re in need of some heat. The Southbank Centre is offering the opportunity to learn the tradition of the Finnish Sauna on the Queen Elizabeth Roof Terrace, guided by a sauna expert. It gets seriously hot at 90 degrees, but there is always the offer of a cold-water bucket to cool down afterwards!
