10 life hacks to improve your apartment

Published: 31/03/2017

Having a nice apartment where everything fits is the dream. Your dresser fits the room, you’ve got the right sofas and armchairs, but there is a certain je ne sais quoi that’s just not there. We’re referring to that feeling of admiration when you go to someone else’s place and admire the ingenuity when they tell you they use magnets to keep their spice rack organized. Here, we present a list of ten nifty little tricks that will turn your apartment from mundane to exciting and interesting and help keep you organised.
1. Use binder clips to keep your beers in place
Binder clips have more uses than you can imagine. You’ve probably already heard about using them to keep your cables organized, but how about beer? Put one through the rails in your fridge to keep your bottles perfectly stacked.

2. Stack vertically
Things like chopping boards and oven trays don’t necessarily stack neatly. They’re different sizes and tend to slip sideways in cupboards. However, you can use tension rods to keep things organized.

Keys are one of those inanimate objects that tend to go walkabout more often than you’d want. Rarely do they have a fixed place in the house, and even if they do, they still manage to end up elsewhere. Dig into your childhood toys and fish out some LEGO pieces to keep your keys and cables in check.
4. Hanging your tall boots

Tall boots have a tendency to annoyingly flop over to one side in an uncontrollable fashion. However, you can use trouser hangers to keep them under control.
5. Use Velcro to store your remotes and controllers
We all know how TV, videogame and heating controllers can easily go AWOL between the cushions in the sofa or pretty much anywhere else in your home. However, Velcro is a great way to keep these all in the same place, making sure you’ll never miss the start of your TV show again just trying to turn the TV on.

6. Towel racks for shoes

As with boots, shoes can end up everywhere with far too much ease. However, towel hooks can be used to easily keep your shoes in place and in pairs, without any of them running off without you.
7. Use the underside of your bed
Several beds have space underneath, so why not use it to your advantage? Put seasonal clothing in suitcases at the further end of the bed, and then use the closer end to keep accessories that usually clutter up your room.

8. Use a towel rail to hold your pan lids

Pots and pans stack very well, but their accompanying lids do quite the opposite. Attach towel rails to the inside of your cupboard door to keep them in place and find them without having to hunt through the entire cupboard every time you want to make Bolognese sauce.
9. Put your washer and dryer on a shelf
Dirty clothes can often be a burden, and take up a lot of space – particularly if you wash different colours separately (if you don’t, you probably should). Put the washer and dryer on a small shelf and store dirty clothes underneath, saving space and making your house look much neater!

10. Keep things off the floor
Having things on the floor can appear messy and cluttered. Look to attach them to a wall, and they can even make for a nice set of décor too.

These are all simple hacks that can improve your life and looks of your apartment in stylish and affordable ways. If you have any of your own – let us know!
