5 Things to Do On a Weekend in SE1

Published: 07/10/2016

Whether you live in London, are thinking about living in London or are just visiting for the weekend, SE1 is a district filled with historic and extraordinary things to do.
1. Borough Market
Home to mouth-watering cuisine from across the globe, exquisite food creations and enticing aromas… Borough Market is a site worth visiting. A place to stimulate the senses, it is an incredible open air food market and is one of the largest and oldest in London, celebrating its 1000th birthday in 2014. Located on Southwark Street and Borough High Street just south of Southwark Cathedral, the atmosphere within the ancient walls of the market is alive and constantly buzzing from the crowds of international visitors and foodies alike. From oyster bars such as Shellseeker, to greengrocers, cheese makers, butchers and artisan bakers- Borough Market has something for everyone. Next time you are in London, we highly recommend that you take a few hours to leisurely stroll through the exquisite maze of mouth-watering food stalls and discover Borough Markets’ abundance of five star food.

2. Bedales of Borough Market
If you’ve been wandering through Borough Market for a good part of the day and are looking for first class respite, look no further. Bedales is a lovely place to spend an afternoon enjoying exquisite wines and delectable tapas in a relaxed atmosphere away from the hectic market. It offers a brilliant selection of wines from small and unusual wineries and if you venture down in their cellar, you can feel the vibrations as trains rattle overhead.
3. Tate Modern
The Tate Modern is London’s free national museum of modern art located in Bankside near the Thames. The 6-story tall Turbine Hall has housed art and exhibits from some of the world’s most famous artists, such as Louise Bourgeois, Pablo Picasso, Robert Delaunay and Roy Lichtenstein. Actress Drew Barrymore is a big fan of the Tate Modern, she says that “there’s just such great style and shopping here. I love the galleries and the pubs out on the street, just having your pint as the sun is setting.” London’s main tourism website Visit London argues that a visit to SE1 simply isn't complete without a trip to Tate Modern.

4. Shakespeare's Globe
Shakespeare
No trip to London could be considered complete without attending an open-air play at Shakespeare's Globe. An important representation of history, Shakespeare’s Globe is an oak-and-thatch replica of original Elizabethan theatre dedicated to the furthering of Shakespeare's work and the playhouse for which he wrote. For lovers of literature and theatre alike, expect a high quality of acting and masterful production that will transport you back in time to the Elizabethan era. If you are curious about the Globe’s history, we highly recommend a guided tour of the building and its construction (in addition to seeing a play).
5. The Shard
The Shard
Even if you don’t visit any of our other recommendations, make sure that you take a trip up to the top of the Shard. The 180 degree panoramic views of the London skyline from the Shard are utterly breath-taking. From the top of the 95-storey skyscraper, you can see many of London's main sights and landmarks, such as the notable Houses of Parliament and the renowned London Eye. If you feel like splurging, book an evening meal at Oblix at the Shard where you can dine on fine wines and gourmet food while enjoying panoramic views of London from the 32nd floor.
